Endless Ragnarok Fatebreaker Guide: Unlock Chaos & New Story

Learn how to reach Fatebreaker, unlock Chaos quests, start the Endless Ragnarok story, and fix the common Conflux Cycle 3 progression blocker.

Fatebreaker is the new skyfarer grade that opens Endless Ragnarok's endgame systems, but reaching it and starting the expansion's new story are not exactly the same progression check. The key base-game quest is The Tale of Bahamut's Rage (Proud), the Proto Bahamut battle. Clearing it opens the path into Chaos content and Fatebreaker progression. However, if the Endless Ragnarok story still does not start afterward, check The Conflux: Cygames' updated Ver. 2.0.2 notes specify that the new story chapter requires both The Tale of Bahamut's Rage and Conflux Cycle 3 to be cleared.

That distinction explains one of the most confusing situations for returning players. You can have a strong Proud-ready party, defeat Proto Bahamut, and still appear to be missing the expansion story because your separate Conflux progression is behind. Do not assume your save is broken until you have checked both requirements.

What Fatebreaker actually unlocks

Fatebreaker is more than a label above the old Proud progression. Endless Ragnarok uses it as the gateway to several systems that define the expansion's endgame. Once the relevant progression is complete, Chaos becomes the new quest difficulty above the older structure, while level-100 characters can begin using Master Traits. Summons also become available after reaching Fatebreaker and completing their tutorial.

The practical reason to prioritize Fatebreaker is therefore not simply access to one harder quest list. It is the point where multiple progression tracks begin to connect: Chaos quests provide new challenges and rewards, Master Traits create another character-development layer, Summons add a new combat tool, and the Endless Ragnarok story leads into additional Conflux depths and later endgame content.

If you are returning after a long break, treat Fatebreaker as a readiness checkpoint. You do not need a mathematically perfect build before attempting the route, but you should have at least one party that can consistently survive Proud encounters, complete mechanics, and produce enough damage during safe windows.

Step 1: clear The Tale of Bahamut's Rage

The most important quest name to remember is The Tale of Bahamut's Rage. It is a Proud-difficulty battle against Proto Bahamut and is the central quest gate referenced by Cygames for moving into Endless Ragnarok content.

Ver. 2.0.2 also made several related quality-of-life changes around this stage of progression. Proto Bahamut's head resistance was reduced, making part destruction easier, while barriers used by several foes summoned during the encounter were weakened. The update also increased Legendary Merit rewards from The Tale of Bahamut's Rage and increased MSP rewards from a selection of Proud quests that includes this fight.

There is another useful progression clarification: you do not need to clear Zero to play Endless Ragnarok. Cygames explicitly states that Zero, the difficult Proud quest introduced before the expansion, is not required. If an old guide tells you to finish every previous endgame encounter before beginning Endless Ragnarok, that route is stricter than the official requirement.

After clearing The Tale of Bahamut's Rage, the game also adjusts access to The Final Vision: speak with Sandalphon in Seedhollow to unlock that Proud quest. That is useful optional progression, but do not confuse it with the separate Endless Ragnarok story requirement.

Step 2: make sure Conflux Cycle 3 is complete

This is the step most likely to explain why the new story does not appear.

The Conflux begins much earlier than Fatebreaker. Cycle 1 comes from a new side quest in Seedhollow during Chapter 6 of the main story, before departing for Dahli Island. Cycle 2 is unlocked by progressing through Hard-difficulty quests, and Cycle 3 by progressing through Maniac-difficulty quests. Deeper Conflux content then follows progress through the Endless Ragnarok story.

Cygames' Ver. 2.0.2 update notes were revised after launch to state that the Endless Ragnarok main-story chapter starts after clearing both The Tale of Bahamut's Rage (Proud) and Conflux Cycle 3. This is more precise than treating Proto Bahamut as the only gate.

If you cleared Proto Bahamut but have no new story prompt, work backward through your Conflux status:

  1. Confirm that you started the Chapter 6 Seedhollow side quest and unlocked Cycle 1.
  2. If Cycle 2 is missing, advance Hard-difficulty quest progression.
  3. If Cycle 3 is missing, advance Maniac-difficulty quest progression.
  4. Clear Cycle 3 rather than merely unlocking it.
  5. Return to the normal progression flow and check for the Endless Ragnarok story continuation.

For a full run-by-run explanation, use the Conflux guide. The important point here is that Conflux is not just an optional farming activity: Cycle 3 is part of the story-entry condition documented in the current official update notes.

Step 3: enter Chaos with a stable party

Chaos is the new quest difficulty introduced with Endless Ragnarok. Cygames describes Chaos quests as the expansion's most challenging quest tier and ties them directly to the new events consuming Zegagrande.

Do not approach your first Chaos quest as a damage benchmark. Use it to identify which part of your existing Proud build stops working when enemy pressure rises. If you are repeatedly knocked out, a theoretical damage increase is not the first fix. Improve survivability, learn the attack sequence, and protect your reliable damage windows. If you survive comfortably but cannot meet the fight's pace, then examine damage cap, skill uptime, buffs, debuffs, weapon progress, and later Master Traits.

Assist Mode and Full Assist Mode are also more flexible in Endless Ragnarok than they were in the original endgame. Cygames says they can be used for quests including Chaos up to the end of the Endless Ragnarok story. That can be useful for accessibility or progression, although players trying to learn high-level manual execution should still practice the mechanics themselves.

Chaos is also where several new systems become relevant. New sigils can be obtained from Chaos or higher quests, Summons can be used in Fatebreaker quests of Chaos difficulty or above, and Primal Bursts can trigger in this content when their full-burst conditions are satisfied.

Fatebreaker and Master Traits

Master Traits are one of the strongest reasons to care about Fatebreaker immediately. The system becomes available to level-100 characters after reaching Fatebreaker. You spend MSP to raise a character's Master Level, which increases how many Master Traits that character can equip. Equipping enough traits associated with a Master Style can activate additional passive style perks.

This means reaching Fatebreaker does not instantly complete a build. It opens another long-term progression track. Invest first in a character you actually control or rely on heavily rather than distributing permanent Master Level spending across the entire roster simply because the menu has become available.

For current MSP farming, trait allocation, and the Ver. 2.0.5 changes to MSP limits, continue to the Master Traits guide.

Fatebreaker and Summons

Summons are also tied to this progression point, but Fatebreaker alone is not the final step. The official Ver. 2.0.2 notes say Summons unlock after reaching Fatebreaker and completing the Summons tutorial. Each Summon has its own trait, and up to four can be equipped.

Their use is restricted by content. You cannot expect the Summon command to work in every old quest simply because you unlocked the system. Summons are usable in Fatebreaker quests at Chaos difficulty or higher and in certain Conflux areas. If the system is unlocked but unavailable in a particular lower-tier quest, that is normally a content restriction rather than a bug.

See the Summons guide for the separate unlock, loadout, and combat rules.

Chaos, Chaos+, and Chaos++ are progression, not one instant unlock

Reaching Fatebreaker should not be interpreted as every Chaos-tier activity becoming available at once. Ver. 2.0.2 lists side quests whose conditions reference unlocking Chaos, Chaos+, and Chaos++, showing that the expansion continues to gate content as you advance.

For example, the Folca side quest Some Assembly Required requires Chaos to be unlocked. The Crew That Never Rests requires Chaos+ and completion of Episode 8 of Percival's fate episode. Like a Fish out of Magma requires Chaos++ plus completion of Some Assembly Required. These examples matter because a missing side quest can be a rank/progression issue rather than an installation problem.

The safest approach is to clear the key quests presented at your current Chaos tier before assuming a later quest should already be visible. When a guide says an item or activity is available in "Chaos," verify whether it means the base Chaos tier, Chaos+, Chaos++, or even later Defy Infinity content.

Why the Endless Ragnarok story still may not appear

When progression seems stuck, diagnose the exact gate instead of reinstalling or starting over.

Proto Bahamut not cleared: finish The Tale of Bahamut's Rage (Proud).

Conflux Cycle 3 not cleared: progress Hard and Maniac quests as needed, unlock Cycle 3, then complete it.

Following an old Zero requirement: ignore it. Cygames explicitly says Zero is not necessary for Endless Ragnarok content.

Expecting every Chaos quest immediately: continue through the newly unlocked key quests and story. Chaos+, Chaos++, and later activities have additional progression conditions.

Expecting Summons before their tutorial: Fatebreaker is required, but the Summons tutorial is part of their unlock flow.

These checks cover the common progression misunderstandings without assuming the save itself is damaged.

A clean returning-player route

For a returning save, the efficient order is to verify that your party can handle Proud, clear The Tale of Bahamut's Rage, then inspect Conflux progress rather than immediately farming old endgame content. Reach and clear Cycle 3, begin the Endless Ragnarok story, and use the newly available Chaos progression to unlock the systems that actually strengthen your current roster.

Once Fatebreaker is active, choose one development target. If your main needs a new growth layer, start Master Traits. If you want a new combat mechanic, finish the Summons tutorial. If your gear is the bottleneck, use Chaos rewards, Conflux materials, and Weapon Transcendence as separate projects rather than attempting all of them at once.

That keeps Fatebreaker in its proper role: it is the bridge from Relink's previous Proud endgame into Endless Ragnarok's interconnected story, Chaos quests, character growth, Summons, and later systems—not a single boss clear that automatically completes every expansion unlock.
