Chaos is the new high-end quest progression introduced with Granblue Fantasy: Relink - Endless Ragnarok. It is not just a harder version of Proud with larger enemy health bars. Chaos quests are part of the expansion's story and progression loop, they are where new sigils can begin appearing, and they are one of the places where Endless Ragnarok-only combat systems such as Summons and Primal Bursts become usable.
For a returning Relink player, the most useful way to think about the progression is Proud and Conflux preparation → Endless Ragnarok story → Chaos → later Chaos tiers → endgame farming. Do not treat Chaos, Chaos+, Chaos++, and Defy Infinity as interchangeable labels. They represent different points in the expansion's progression, and some side quests explicitly require a particular tier to have been unlocked.
How do you unlock Chaos difficulty?
Cygames' launch information ties the start of the new content to the Proto Bahamut quest. The official Ver. 2.0.2 notes give the most precise condition for beginning the Endless Ragnarok chapter: clear both The Tale of Bahamut's Rage (Proud) and Cycle 3 of the Conflux.
That second requirement is easy to miss if you only followed early promotional instructions. Cycle 3 is part of a separate progression chain: Cycle 1 starts from a Chapter 6 Seedhollow side quest, Cycle 2 opens through Hard-difficulty progression, and Cycle 3 opens through Maniac progression. If you have beaten Proto Bahamut but the expected Endless Ragnarok progression is not appearing, check your Conflux progress before repeatedly clearing Proud quests.
Once you enter the expansion's Fatebreaker progression, Chaos becomes the new quest tier around which several systems are built. The official systems page describes Chaos quests as the game's new highest-tier challenge category featuring the ragnalia and other new threats, with quest progress revealing more of the chaos affecting Zegagrande.

Chaos, Chaos+ and Chaos++ are progression steps
The launch patch does not publish one simple table saying "clear X quests to unlock every later rank," so be careful with guides that invent a universal numerical requirement. What the official notes do show clearly is that Chaos+ and Chaos++ are separate progression states because newly added side quests use them as explicit unlock conditions.
For example, the Folca side quest The Crew That Never Rests requires Chaos+ to be unlocked as well as Episode 8 of Percival's fate episode. Like a Fish out of Magma requires Chaos++ plus completion of Some Assembly Required. Seedhollow's Pry It from My Claws also requires Chaos+.
This matters because a player can be "in Chaos" without having reached every system, quest, or reward associated with the later tiers. When a side quest is missing, check the exact tier named in its requirement rather than assuming your game is bugged.
A practical progression order
A clean route for a returning account is:
- Finish the Proud/Conflux prerequisites and enter Endless Ragnarok.
- Clear the available Chaos key/story quests instead of immediately repeating the easiest farm.
- Upgrade the character you actually intend to use in harder quests, including Master Traits once available.
- Learn Summons and Primal Bursts in content where they are enabled.
- Continue story and key-quest progression until Chaos+ and then Chaos++ content opens.
- Only after that should you optimize repeat farms around a specific sigil, material, MSP target, or build test.
The important distinction is between progression clears and farm clears. A fast Chaos quest can be excellent for materials, but repeatedly clearing it may not solve a missing Chaos+ story or key-quest requirement.
What changes when you reach Chaos?
Chaos is important because multiple Endless Ragnarok systems converge here.
Summons become part of actual quest combat
Summons unlock after reaching Fatebreaker and completing the Summons tutorial. Up to four can be equipped, but they are not usable in every old Relink quest. Cygames limits Summon use to Fatebreaker quests of Chaos or higher and certain areas of the Conflux.
That makes Chaos the correct place to start evaluating a Summon loadout under real endgame pressure. A Summon that looks impressive in isolation is only useful if its active or support effect complements your character and the encounter you are farming. See the Summons guide for the separate unlock and loadout discussion.
Primal Bursts are enabled
Primal Bursts are another Endless Ragnarok battle system available in Chaos-or-higher Fatebreaker quests and the Conflux. They trigger after a full burst when their conditions are met and call on powers such as Proto Bahamut or Excavallion.
Do not confuse them with ordinary Summons. Summons are equipped progression tools with their own traits and effects; a Primal Burst is tied to coordinated Skybound Arts and the full-burst flow. In harder Chaos encounters, understanding that distinction is more useful than simply treating every new visual effect as a summon attack.
New sigils enter the reward pool
Ver. 2.0.2 added new sigils obtainable as rewards from Chaos difficulty or higher. That is one reason old pre-expansion "best in slot" lists should not automatically be treated as complete Endless Ragnarok builds.
The practical rule is to avoid spending hours perfecting a launch-era setup immediately before entering Chaos. Get the character stable enough to clear, see which new rewards actually drop for your account, and then decide where the build's bottleneck has moved.
Master Traits matter more as Chaos gets harder
Master Traits unlock for level 100 characters after reaching Fatebreaker. MSP raises Master Level, higher Master Level expands how many Master Traits a character can equip, and equipping enough traits from a master style can activate its passive style perks.
You do not need a theoretically perfect Master Trait configuration before your first Chaos clear. Start with a legal setup that reinforces the actions your character already performs consistently. Then use failed runs to identify whether you are losing because of survivability, poor damage uptime, an encounter mechanic, or an actual damage ceiling.
This distinction became more important after Ver. 2.0.5 because Cygames fixed a menu bug that could allow Master Traits to be equipped beyond the normal equip limit. If an old screenshot or community build appears to have an impossible number of traits equipped, do not use it as a benchmark for a current legal build.
Our Master Traits guide covers MSP investment and respec decisions separately.
Ver. 2.0.5 changed Chaos++ MSP farming significantly
For current players, one of the biggest reasons to distinguish Chaos++ from earlier Chaos content is MSP. Ver. 2.0.5 substantially increased the clear rewards for a group of Chaos++ quests.
| Chaos++ quest | MSP before 2.0.5 | MSP in 2.0.5 |
|---|---|---|
| The Myths Are Real | 30,000 | 50,000 |
| In the Wrong Hands | 30,000 | 50,000 |
| The Tempest Rises | 30,000 | 50,000 |
| Reclusive Vengeance | 30,000 | 50,000 |
| Four Dragons of the Apocalypse | 30,000 | 140,000 |
| Rock Around the Clock | 30,000 | 75,000 |
| An Act of Automagod | 30,000 | 75,000 |
| Beneath Primeval Wings | 30,000 | 75,000 |
| Eternal Pride | 30,000 | 75,000 |
The same patch increased the stored MSP cap from 999,999 to 9,999,999, so long farming sessions are less likely to waste progression simply because the old cap was reached.
Do not choose an MSP farm from reward size alone. A 140,000-MSP quest is not automatically more efficient for your account than a 75,000-MSP quest if your clear is unreliable or dramatically slower. Compare MSP per successful minute, not MSP per clear. A repeatable fight with minimal resets often wins over a nominally richer fight that your party barely survives.
Where does Defy Infinity fit?
Defy Infinity sits beyond the ordinary Chaos++ farming conversation and is especially relevant after Ver. 2.0.5. Cygames increased all Defy Infinity quests from 50,000 MSP to 250,000 MSP per clear.
That makes the category extremely attractive once your account can clear it efficiently, but it does not make earlier Chaos progression obsolete. You still need the story, systems, gear, Master Trait investment, encounter knowledge, and general account strength that lead into the later endgame.
A common progression mistake is reading "250,000 MSP" and treating Defy Infinity as the first Master Level farm to target. If your runs fail frequently, use Chaos++ to strengthen the relevant characters and learn the expansion's combat systems first. The best farm is the highest-reward content you can clear consistently, not the highest number visible in a patch note.
Can you use Assist Mode in Chaos?
Yes, but there is an important scope condition. Endless Ragnarok expands Assist Mode and Full Assist Mode into higher difficulty content that the original Relink excluded. Cygames says these modes can be used for quests including Chaos up to the end of the Endless Ragnarok story.
That makes Assist Mode useful for players who primarily want to experience the expansion's story or who are returning after a long break. It should not be interpreted as a promise that every post-story endgame challenge is designed around Full Assist. When the game moves beyond the story progression boundary, prepare to engage with the encounters normally.
What should you farm first in Chaos?
Start with whatever unlocks the next meaningful account upgrade. If a key/story quest is available, clear that before settling into repetitive farming. If your main character has just unlocked Master Traits, MSP may be the bottleneck. If your build is still based entirely on old Relink equipment, new Chaos-or-higher sigils may have more value. If you are dying to mechanics rather than damage checks, another hour of raw stat farming may be less useful than learning the fight.
A useful priority is unlock → stable clear → targeted upgrade → faster repeat clear. That sequence prevents the classic endgame trap of farming a comfortable quest for hours without advancing the system that actually blocks the next tier.
Chaos difficulty FAQ
Is Chaos the same as Proud?
No. Proud is part of the original Relink progression. Chaos is the new Endless Ragnarok quest difficulty and is connected to the expansion's story and Fatebreaker systems.
Do I need to clear Zero to enter Endless Ragnarok?
No. Ver. 2.0.2 explicitly notes that clearing Zero (Proud) is not required to start the new story. The relevant Proud quest is The Tale of Bahamut's Rage, together with Conflux Cycle 3.
Why can't I use Summons in an old quest?
Summons are restricted to Fatebreaker quests at Chaos difficulty or higher and certain Conflux areas. Unlocking a Summon does not make it available in every legacy quest.
Where do the new Endless Ragnarok sigils drop?
Cygames states that the new sigils added with Ver. 2.0.2 can be obtained from Chaos-difficulty or higher quest rewards.
Is Chaos++ still worth farming after Ver. 2.0.5?
Yes. Multiple Chaos++ quests received large MSP increases. Defy Infinity pays even more MSP per clear, but Chaos++ can remain the better farm for an account that clears it substantially faster or needs its other rewards.
