Unlock Eustace first if you want a safer ranged main; unlock Beatrix first if you already enjoy committing to melee combos. Save your next cards until you know whether you truly want Fraux or Fediel early: Endless Ragnarok lets story progress provide their special cards, while Gallanza and Maglielle have their own Chapter Ø Hard-quest route. In other words, your low-risk plan is one card now, story and Hard-quest progress next, then spend shortcuts only on the character you are ready to play.
Endless Ragnarok adds Beatrix, Eustace, Gallanza, Maglielle, Fraux, and Fediel. The dedicated new-character roster answers who the six additions are and how each one is unlocked. This page answers a different question: which recruit should you prioritize first, and when is spending a normal Crewmate Card actually worth it?
The six recruits at a glance
| Character | Official unlock route | Good first choice when… | Card advice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beatrix | One normal Crewmate Card | You want an aggressive close-range character and are comfortable staying on a boss. | A strong first-card pick for melee players. |
| Eustace | One normal Crewmate Card | You prefer ranged pressure and a less committal first experiment. | Best default first card for players without a clear main. |
| Gallanza | Special Crewmate Card from a Chapter Ø Hard-quest scene | You want a durable, frontline-oriented playstyle. | Do the Hard-quest route; do not reserve normal cards for him. |
| Maglielle | Special Crewmate Card from the same Chapter Ø route | You like a flexible sword-and-magic style with team utility. | Progress the route alongside Gallanza. |
| Fraux | Story-earned special card, or two normal cards | You specifically want her before the story would award her. | Wait unless she is your planned main. |
| Fediel | Story-earned special card, or two normal cards | You want a mobile dark-element attacker now, not later in the story. | Treat the two-card option as an intentional shortcut. |
The role descriptions above are practical summaries from gameplay coverage, not official strength rankings. The unlock requirements are from Cygames' Ver. 2.0.2 notes.
The best unlock order for most players
Use this order unless a character's style is clearly why you bought the expansion.
- Spend one card on Eustace or Beatrix. Pick Eustace for ranged comfort; pick Beatrix for melee commitment. Do not buy both immediately just because they are available.
- Keep playing the main game and Chapter Ø Hard quests. This is how Gallanza and Maglielle's special-card path opens. Cygames describes it as a special scene triggered after clearing certain Hard-difficulty Chapter Ø quests.
- Start and progress Endless Ragnarok's story. Fraux and Fediel's special cards come from story progress. A third-party unlock guide reports Fraux arriving around the middle of that story and Fediel near its end; treat that timing as a useful expectation, not a substitute for the in-game prompt.
- Spend two cards on Fraux or Fediel only when time matters more than card efficiency. That is sensible if the character is your intended manual main, or if you want to build a specific co-op party now. It is poor value if you only want to sample them.
- Invest materials after a real test session. Run several quests with the newcomer before committing scarce upgrade resources. The expansion adds Master Traits, so every character has more ways to absorb your time and materials than the initial unlock suggests.
Choose your first card by how you actually play
Choose Eustace for a beginner-safe first unlock
Eustace is the default recommendation for a player who has not yet decided on a new main. Gameplay guides characterize him as a mobile ranged specialist, which gives you room to learn unfamiliar bosses and keep contributing while repositioning. Take him first if close-range upkeep tends to make you miss mechanics or if you mainly want a different feel from Relink's existing melee roster.
This is not a claim that Eustace is universally stronger. He is simply the lower-risk purchase when the decision is between trying a new style and immediately optimizing one.
Choose Beatrix if you want to play in the boss's space
Beatrix is the better first card for players who enjoy active melee routing, combo finishers, and learning when to stay in rather than retreat. Cygames' launch update also adjusted how players switch Beatrix's Delta Clock modes and made a dodge after a combo finisher less disruptive in Devour Causality. That does not make her an automatic top pick, but it does make her the obvious choice when her close-range rhythm is what you want to practice.
Avoid making Beatrix your “safe” unlock if you normally prefer to observe encounters from range. You will get more from a character you are willing to take into repeated quests than from a popular name you leave on the bench.
Let Gallanza and Maglielle arrive through their route
Gallanza and Maglielle are not normal-card decisions. Their special Crewmate Cards are earned by triggering the Chapter Ø Hard-quest scene, then exchanged at the Knickknack Shack. Keep this as a progression goal rather than trying to force it through a card budget.
Choose Gallanza when you want a heavier frontline presence. Choose Maglielle when a sword-and-magic hybrid with support-minded options sounds more useful to your group. If you mostly play solo, test both with your preferred party before deciding which one earns deeper upgrades.
Spend early on Fraux or Fediel only for a real plan
Fraux and Fediel can join through Endless Ragnarok story progress, or you can substitute two normal Crewmate Cards each. That shortcut is best for a player who has already watched gameplay, knows the character will be a main, and wants to use that character during the story rather than after it.
Otherwise, wait. The story route protects four normal cards across the pair, and it gives you time to see whether their playstyles fit your hands and party. Cygames also sells optional character expansion sets for Fraux and Fediel that include their named Crewmate Card plus starter items; these require Endless Ragnarok and are a separate paid shortcut, not a requirement to recruit them.
A no-regrets Crewmate Card checklist
- Confirm Endless Ragnarok is installed and your game is on the current update.
- Pick one immediate normal-card recruit: Eustace for range, Beatrix for melee.
- Clear the relevant Chapter Ø Hard quests and return to town if you are waiting on Gallanza and Maglielle's scene.
- Progress the Endless Ragnarok story before paying two cards for Fraux or Fediel.
- Use any early shortcut only after deciding that character will see regular manual or co-op play.
- Test a recruit in several quests before spending heavily on Master Traits, weapons, or sigils.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
Spending every normal card on day one. Keep at least two cards until you know whether the Fraux or Fediel shortcut changes your immediate plans. Their story route means urgency, not access, is what the two-card option buys.
Waiting for Gallanza and Maglielle without pushing Hard quests. Their special cards are tied to a Chapter Ø Hard-quest scene. Check your quest progress rather than assuming they use the ordinary card menu.
Treating a guide's role label as a tier ranking. Ranged, frontline, and utility labels help you choose what to test; they do not replace your own comfort with a character or your party's needs.
